The program is designed to help every student build confidence in the water, develop essential lifesaving skills, and foster a lifelong love of swimming, not just for the pool, but for rivers, lakes, and the ocean.

Our teachers are nationally accredited and provide a safe, social and encouraging learning environment to help your child to reach their full potential in and out of the water.

What's included?
· One 30-minute swimming lesson per week
· Unlimited make-up lessons if your child needs to miss a lesson
· Access to the splash park and leisure pool outside of lesson times

Infant lessons (6 months - 3 years)
The infant program introduces your child to the water in a playful and secure environment. Parents / carers support their baby or toddler in the pool, which helps to build the child’s confidence and support their learning. It’s also a wonderful way for parent and child to bond.
There are three different levels in the infant program: Starfish, Periwinkle and Minnow.

Ages: 6-12 months
Class size: 8 students- Parent / carer water safety education

Ages: 1-2 years

Minnow
Ages: 2-3 years

Preschool lessons (3 - 5 years)
The preschool program teaches children to become more independent in the water. Children begin to follow instructions from their swimming teacher and develop important swimming and survival skills.
There are three levels in the preschool program: Tadpole, Goldfish and Flying Fish. Teachers assess and progress children through these levels based on their individual ability.

Ages: 3-5 years
Class size: 4 students- Develop independence in the water
- Independent floating on front and back
- Slide entry and exit safely and independently
- Complete submersion and recovery independently
- Relaxed, flutter kick with an aid
- Extending out to reach and / or paddle
Goldfish
Ages: 3- 5 years
Class size: 5 students- Water awareness
- Understanding of different entries and safe choices around water environments
- Front and back floats
- Streamlined body position
- Develop flutter propulsion with kicking
- Develop breath control
- Introduction to freestyle and backstroke arm movement
Flying Fish
Ages: 3-5 years
Class size: 5 students- Roll from front to back and back to front while kicking
- Continued development of flutter kicks with strong propulsion
- Streamlined body position with hands together, face down blowing bubbles
- Kicks on backs with ears in the water, tummy up and arms by side
- Continual development of freestyle and backstroke arm movements
- Learn how to turn head to breath to the side

School-age lessons (Ages 5+)
In the school-age program, children learn about safe activity in the water and develop vital survival skills not just for the pool but for rivers, lakes and the ocean.
There are multiple levels within the school-age program. Teachers assess and progress children through these levels based on their individual ability.

Ages: 5+ years
Class size: 5 students- Water awareness
- Understanding of different entries and safe choices around water environments

Sardine
Ages: 5+ years
Class size: 5 students- We have a continuous, relaxed, flutter kick with strong propulsion
- Form a streamlined body position on front and back
- Continual development of freestyle and backstroke
- Learn how to turn head to breath to the side
- Introduce survival backstroke and dolphin kick
Turtle

Ages: 5+ years
Class size: 6 students- Perform an underwater push and glide
- Continual, relaxed flutter kick
- Freestyle is continued with side breathing
- Backstroke demonstrates continuous, relaxed kicking
- Introduction to breaststroke kick on their back
- Continual development of dolphin kick motion
Salmon
Ages: 5+ years
Class size: 6 students- Developing freestyle and backstroke technique without board
- Continued development of breaststroke kick technique with aid
- Learn to catch at beginning of stroke
- Confident underwater movement and somersaults
Tuna
Ages: 5+ years
Class size: 6 students- Creating strong strokes with continual correction
- Increasing endurance through further swimming distance
- Development of breaststroke kick to form strong propulsion
- Basic introduction to breaststroke arms
- Continual development of starts from wall
- Introduction to tumble turns
Dolphin
Ages: 5+ years
Class size: 7 students- Endurance development
- Complete breaststroke with timing
- Successful execution of survival backstroke and side stroke
- Introduction to basic butterfly arms
- Correct starts from wall for all strokes
- Development of successful tumble turns
Shark
Ages: 5+ years
Class size: 7 students- Increasing endurance to pathway feed into squad program

Squad programs (Ages 5+)
Our squad programs are a vital step between our swimming lessons program and competitive club swimming. They focus on building strong technique, endurance, speed and efficiency, and introduce squad-style training. Participants also develop personal skills such as teamwork, discipline, confidence and resilience to prepare for competitions.
We offer junior squad programs as well as a non-competitive squad for those who want to continue swimming without the pressure of competition.
Level Description Junior 4
Ages: 5+ years
Class size: 16 students- Improve technique on all strokes
- Prepare for squad and competitive swimming

- 100 metre backstroke

Competitive Squad programs (Ages 5+)
After Junior Development, swimmers will either be ready to race and able to join Junior 2 or they may be more interested in squad training which doesn’t involve commitment to racing. If swimmers are not interested in racing then they should join Super squad.
Level Description Junior 2

Performance squads
Swimmers will have been passed to this squad from junior development. Swimmers will be notified by the club and will be sent all of the relevant information on how to join.
This squad is the beginning of competitions. All 4 Swimming 4 strokes, turns, dives and introduction to medley swimming.
Junior 1

Performance squads
Swimmers have been passed to this squad because the have reached the criteria which is related to training and racing. All swimmers will be competitive members and are ready to learn more about the different kinds of training sets.
All squads beyond junior 1 will only be promoted at coaches meetings if they meet all of the criteria and coaches believe they have long term athlete development.
- Criteria Time - 50m Freestyle and a Form Stroke (Butterfly, Breaststroke or Backstroke)
- 8 x 50m Freestyle on 1:00
- 6 x 50m Medley Combination on 1:10
- 4 x 50m Kick on 1:20
- Race Starts
- All Turns - Including Medley Switch Turns
- Consistent Racing
- Competed in a 200m Freestyle and Medley
Junior Excellence

Performance squads

- Endurance development over 50m for all strokes with endurance swim incorporation
- Complete Breaststroke with timing

Bronze Squad

Senior Pathway Squads
Offers 3 x 1.5 hour sessions per week and swimmers should feel confident to swim 400m without stopping before joining this squad. - MSC non-competitive fitness squad

Level Description Adult Foundation
Class size: 6 students
Duration: 30 minutes
Age: 18+- Developing confidence in water
- Safe entry and exit
- Water awareness and walking in all directions
- Develop breath control
- Front and back floats, with recovery to a standing position
- Relaxed, flutter kick with an aid
- Forward movement of the arms
Adult Beginner
Class size: 6 students
Duration: 30 minutes
Age: 18+
- Understanding the motion of rolling from front to back to front, while flutter kicking in a forward motion
- Continuous, relaxed flutter kick with strong propulsion
- Form a streamlined body position
- Ears in the water on back
- Introduction of freestyle and backstroke arm movements
- Learn how to turn head to breathe to the side with continuous, relaxed flutter kick
Adult Intermediate
Class size: 6 students
Duration: 30 minutes
Age: 18+- Developing freestyle and backstroke technique
- Strong, continuous flutter kick
- Introduction to breaststroke
- Increasing endurance
- Learn to demonstrate correct survival backstroke

Watch Around Water policy
At SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre and the Y we are a Watch Around Water endorsed aquatic safety organisation. The following information is the new watch around water policy launched in centre from 1 September 2019.
Watch Around Water is a set of industry guidelines outlining the minimum supervision requirements of young children at all affiliated aquatic venues.
Children under 5 years old
All children MUST be accompanied into the centre by a person 16 years and older and supervised within arms’ reach, at all times in the water.
All children MUST wear a pink wristband supplied by YMCA staff to help identify their age while swimming.
Children will not be admitted without a full fee paying parent/guardian who must also be in the water at all times. Groups will not be admitted entry where the number of parents/guardians supervising a group of children under 5 years exceeds the ratio of 1:2 (effective 1 September 2019).
Children under 10 years old
All children under the age of 10 MUST be accompanied into the centre by a person 16 years and older. All children MUST be actively supervised by an adult over the age of 16 at all times. The adult must have a clear and active view of the child with no physical or structural barriers between them (this includes tech and devices).
A child of limited swimming ability and or reliant on a flotation aid much be accompanied and in arms' reach in the water by a responsible person 16 years and older regardless of the child's age.
All children MUST wear a yellow wristband supplied by YMCA staff to help identify their age while swimming. Groups will not be admitted entry where the number of parents/guardians supervising a group of children under 10 years exceeds the ratio of 1:4.All children
Unsupervised children (of any age) will be removed from the water if the lifeguard is concerned for their safety.
A child of limited swimming ability and or reliant on a flotation aid much be accompaniedand in arms' reach in the water by a responsible person 16 years and older regardless of the child's age.
Birthday parties
All children under the age of 10 MUST be accompanied into the centre by a person 16 years and older and handed over to the supervision of the birthday party host (staff member).
All birthday party participants must wear a green wristband to identify their participation in a party AND will be given an age based wristband (pink or yellow) at the conclusion of their birthday party if they choose to use the aquatic facilities (effective 1 September 2019). The adult guardian of the birthday party child MUST remain accessible and actively supervise the group at all times.
At the conclusion of the birthday party the child/children will remain in the supervision of the birthday party leader and supervising parent until physically handed over to their supervising parent/guardian.
